
Doubleday is an American publishing company. In 1980 the company bought the New York Mets after Charles Shipman Payson sold the team to them. Nelson Doubleday, Jr. was the key man who bought the ball club. He served as president of the company from 1978-1986. In 2002 Doubleday Jr. sold his last share to Fred Wilpon and since then Wilpon has been the majority owner of the Mets.
